Jeremiah Tyler Named A Finalist For The Bushnell Cup

Jeremiah Tyler's extraordinary junior year has brought him one more honor, and possibly another one after this.

Tyler, the Princeton linebacker, has been named one of two finalists for the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year. The other finalist is Dartmouth's Jack Traynor.

The two finalists for the Offensive Player of the Year are Brown quarterback E.J. Perry and Yale quarterback Kurt Rawlings.

"I would never have that I would qualify for such a prestigious award," Tyler said. "I could have never done it without God and the sacrifice of my parents, coaches and teammates."

For the 10th consecutive year, the Ivy League and the National Football Foundation (NFF) are partnering to co-host the presentation of the Bushnell Cups, as part of the festivities surrounding the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York City. The Asa. S. Bushnell Cup will be awarded at a special reception and press conference presented by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses in the Mercury Ballroom of the New York Hilton Midtown beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9. The ceremony will once again be streamed live via ESPN+, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.

"As I said multiple times this year, Jeremiah Tyler makes our defense go," said Princeton head football coach Bob Surace. "He fills up the stat sheet. He's among the league leaders in tackles, tackles for losses and sacks. His ability in coverage sometimes goes unnoticed, but is greatly appreciated by our coaches. JT stands with guys like Mike Catapano ('14) and Mike Zeuli ('15) as one of the highest effort players I have coached."

Tyler led the Ivy League in tackles for loss and was second on the Princeton team in total tackles with 62 (34 solo). He was one of four unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selections (Traynor was also a unanimous pick) and a nominee for the Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in the FCS.

A sociology major from Detroit, Tyler was a second-team All-Ivy pick a year ago, during Princeton's 10-0 season. He helped lead the Tigers to an 8-2 record in 2019 and was one of two recipients (along with quarterback Kevin Davidson) of the Poe-Kazmaier Trophy, the highest Princeton football annual honor.
