Men's Hockey Falls To Quinnipiac, 3-1
December 28, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON – A slow start was too much for Princeton (2-9-3, 0-5-2 ECAC) to overcome as Quinnipiac (8-7-1, 3-3-1 ECAC) rode two first-period goals to a 3-1 win in an ECAC game at Hobey Baker Rink.
A pair of goals 2:12 apart midway through the first period had Princeton behind after 20:00 of play. Jayden Lee opened the scoring with a shot off the far post with 12:13 remaining in the opening period, assisted by Karlis Cukste and Skylar Brind'Amour.
Just over two minutes later, a turnover along the boards led to a 2-on-1 and Odeen Tufto finished an Alex Whelan pass to double Quinnipiac's lead.
Princeton countered with vigor in the second period, outshooting the Bobcats, 16-9, and cutting into the deficit with Jeremy Germain's first goal of the season with 5:33 remaining in the period. Finn Evans started the play with a pass behind the Princeton cage to Matthew Thom who it Germain on the breakout. Germain did the rest of the work, navigating through the neutral zone and firing a laser from the slot which beat Keith Petruzzelli top corner.
The Tigers caught a good break in the final minute of the second period as a Tufte shot bounced off both posts before Mark Paolini cleared the loose puck off the goal line just as it was about to creep over the line. The officials reviewed the call, but replay confirmed no-goal and kept Princeton within one after 40:00.
Princeton's comeback was halted with under 5:00 remaining when Corey Andonovski was called for a kneeing major and the Tigers were rendered shorthanded for the rest of the game, and a Wyatt Bongiovanni goal off the rush from Ethan de Jong and Tufto sealed the final result.
The two teams reconvene on Sunday night in Hamden, Conn. to complete the home-and-home series.
