Women’s Volleyball Concludes Season at NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 2019 season came to an end for the Ivy League champion Princeton University women's volleyball team Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship as the Tigers fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) to the No. 11 seed Pennsylvania State University inside Rec Hall.
Along with its share of the Ivy League Championship and its third appearance at the NCAA Tournament in four years, the Tigers ended the season with a 17-8 record and 10-2 record in conference play. Along with its No. 11 seed, Penn State is also ranked No. 7 nationally.
Senior Maggie O'Connell led Princeton with 10 kills while junior Clare Lenihan had eight and a team-high two service aces. Senior Jessie Harris finished with a team-high 32 assists and sophomore Cameron Dames led the team in digs with 12. Freshman Olivia Schewe had a team-high three blocks.
The first point of the match came from a Schewe kill and the Tigers were able to take the upper hand early. A kill by Harris followed by a Nittany Lion attacking error saw the Tigers go up 5-3, but Penn State responded with a run of their own that saw it take a 6-8 lead. Princeton would gain the advantage again after a Peterkin kill then a solo block by Schewe saw it jump ahead 9-8. The Nittany Lions would go on to take a 17-20 lead, but a 3-0 run by Princeton that was led off by a double block by Schewe and O'Connell and also featured a double block by O'Connell knotted the score at 20-20. Despite the Tigers' late run, Penn State would take the set 25-21.
The Nittany Lions would win the first two points of the second set and never trail. The Tigers were able to get as close as 21-19, but the Nittany Lions prevailed 25-20.
Princeton started the third set on a 4-0 run led off by attacking error by Penn State and also featuring a pair of O'Connell kills and another Nittany Lion attacking error. Penn State managed to slightly catch up and make it 8-6, but another pair of attacking errors helped the Tigers remain in control with a 10-6 advantage. The Nittany Lions battled back and took a 17-16 lead, but a kill by Lenihan knotted the score. Buoyed by a spirited home crowd, Penn State would run away with the set and win it 25-21, putting an end to an incredible 2019 campaign for the Princeton University women's volleyball team.
