Doubles Win Highlights Weekend Sweep-Completing Victory over Penn State
February 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Completing a three-match weekend sweep during which head coach Billy Pate won his 100th match at Princeton, the Tiger men's tennis team beat Penn State 5-2 and got a win over a highly-ranked doubles team along the way.
Princeton improved to 7-1 with the win and extended its winning streak to five matches heading into next weekend's ECAC Championship at Penn.
Princeton began Sunday's match by winning the doubles point. Justin Barki and Karl Poling won their match at second singles and Damian Rodriguez and Ryan Seggerman won a battle of top-15 doubles teams when they beat Penn State's fourth-ranked Constant De La Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth 6-4 on court one. Bill Duo and Payton Holden completed the sweep on court three.
"We capped off a challenging home weekend of three matches with a great showing today against Penn State," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "They are a quality team and we needed a complete team effort and that's what we had. I was very proud of the doubles and how we took charge of the momentum in the match by sweeping all three courts. It was also significant to have Duo and Roberts getting off the court quickly with resounding victories to put us up 3-0. We're excited for the ECAC at Penn next weekend and will have a good week of practice to continue building on this weekend's success."
Duo and Davey Roberts opened singles play with straight-set wins on courts four and five before Penn State won twice to pull within 3-2. Rodriguez then had the clincher on court two, and Poling finished it off with a win in an abbreviated third set decided by a tiebreak following a 3-3 score.
