PRINCETON, N.J. – Sydney Jordan has been selected as a co-winner of Princeton University's 2019 Moses Taylor Pyne Honor Prize, the highest general distinction given to an undergraduate. Annabel Barry was picked as the other winner.
Â
They will be recognized at a luncheon during Alumni Day on Feb. 23.
Â
The Pyne Honor Prize, established in 1921, is awarded to the senior who has most clearly manifested excellent scholarship, strength of character and effective leadership. Previous recipients include the late Princeton President Emeritus Robert F. Goheen, former U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Â
Jordan is majoring in philosophy with a certificate in Near Eastern Studies. Her senior thesis is about corporate social responsibility.
Â
"Individuals often ask that companies take a side on important political issues, regardless of potential effects on profit," Jordan said in the Princeton Office of Communications' announcement. "Given the unprecedented reach of social media, these demands can quickly gain momentum and draw the attention of corporate leaders. I am investigating how individual and corporate responsibilities to voice disapproval of policy positions we find dangerous or immoral can be balanced with a public responsibility to promote free speech."
Â
"Sydney is an irreplaceable gift to Princeton; a competitive spirit, an Ivy League Champion, a brilliant scholar, a team captain, and a compassionate member of our campus community," said head coach Courtney Banghart. "As an athlete, Sydney is simply the gold standard for what is possible when you are unwilling to fall victim to shortcuts. A three-year starter in our program, Sydney has prided herself on doing things the right way every single day. She has always been willing to do whatever is needed for her team to achieve success. More importantly, as a member of the campus community, Sydney is willing to speak up for what's right and to use her thoughtful voice to be a force for good. She is the epitome of selflessness, grit, and perseverance and is such a model for all that a Princeton student-athlete can be. I'm immensely proud to call her a Tiger.
Â
The senior captain has played in 96 games, making 70 starts for the Tigers. She's averaged 4.4 points, 3.3 rebounds in her time at Princeton and has been part of two NCAA Tournament teams along with the 2018 Ivy Regular Season and Ivy Tournament Championships.
