The Princeton men's swimming and diving team understands the challenge that lays ahead this weekend. In fact, the Tigers embrace it.
Harvard enters the upcoming Ivy League Championships as both the two-time reigning champion and a heavy favorite following a perfect run through the league this season, but Princeton has a depth of competitors on both the swimming and diving side that the team believes could push Harvard throughout the weekend. The event begins Wednesday with the 200 medley and 800 free relays, and then will continue with both preliminary (11 am) and finals (6 pm) sessions on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Each session over the final three days will be streamed live on ESPN+ (see links above).
While Princeton has numerous swimmers and divers who bring championship experience into the weekend, the Tigers also have a handful of freshmen who have made an immediate impact this season. Here is a quick look at some of the names you'll want to know as the week progresses.
WEDNESDAY
• Princeton opens with the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay
• senior co-captain Murphy McQuet is likely to swim at least once in the opening session; he has the team's best time in the 100 free (43.94) and the 200 free (1:36.54)
THURSDAY
• individual events start with the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 1-meter diving
• freshman Brendan Firlie currently has the league's fourth-fastest 500 time (4:24.17)
• freshman Raunak Khosla, who has a claim to the best debut season of any Ivy swimmer, enters with the league's second-fastest 200 IM time (1:45.46)
• both Colten Young and Charlie Minns were A finalists in the 1-meter final at the 2018 Ivies
FRIDAY
• Khosla has the Ivy's fastest 400 IM time (3:46.70), while Penn's reigning Ivy champ Mark Andrew is second (3:46.79); nobody else is within two seconds of either swimmer
• juniors Daniel Arris (54.53) and Derek Cox (54.67) both enter the 100 breast with top-five times in the Ivy League
• senior co-captain Cole Buese was an A finalist in both the 100 back and 100 fly last season, and he brings top-ten Ivy times into both events this weekend
• Princeton placed second in the 400 medley relay to Harvard last season
SATURDAY
• while Buese was the 2018 Ivy runner-up in the 200 fly, Khosla brings the fastest time into the event this season (1:43.83)
• Buese could also factor into the 200 back, where he has the league's second-fastest time (1:44.66)
• the 2018 3-meter final saw Young post the second-highest freshman total in history (392.50), only to place second in the event to the only freshman ever to go higher, Columbia's Jonathan Suckow (447.80)
• the meet will close with the 400 free relay; McQuet is the only returning Tiger to compete in that event last year
