Tigers Open Three-Match Homestand with Win over Clemson
February 08, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Opening a three-match weekend homestand, the Princeton men's tennis team beat Clemson 5-2 Friday night in Jadwin.
"It was a good effort for us at key moments tonight," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "Clemson fought hard and pushed us. We dug ourselves holes in doubles and were fortunate to claw back, though we did a good job of handling the pressure moments. A point of emphasis will be focusing on quicker starts and sustained energy throughout the match. Though we had a 3-0 lead, it was quickly 3-2 with Poling and Duo in the third set fighting for the win. I'm proud of our outstanding group of four freshmen and it's been great to see them make significant contributions, especially with the match on the line. We have two more very tough matches this weekend and will need to mentally and physically prepare to be ready to go again."
Damian Rodriguez and Ryan Seggerman, the 15th-ranked doubles team in the nation, won on court one and paired that with a Bill Duo and Payton Holden win on court three to secure the doubles point. Princeton then had three of the first five singles matches off court, courtesy of Justin Barki, Seggerman and Karl Poling, to clinch the match before Duo added a win.
Princeton will host Charlotte Saturday at 6 p.m. as the homestand continues. The matches will be streamed on ESPN3 and live results will be available here.
