Tigers' Second Win of the Homestand Reaches Milestone
February 09, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Ryan Seggerman beat an ITA-ranked opponent and Karl Poling won in both doubles and singles as the Tigers used four singles wins to beat Charlotte 4-3 in Jadwin Gym on a milestone Saturday night.
Seggerman beat 70th-ranked Luca Keist in straight sets after Bill Duo won his match at fifth in straight sets to put Princeton up 2-1. The Tigers lost the doubles point with all three matches finishing two games apart, but Princeton followed the Duo and Seggerman wins with victories from Damian Rodriguez and Poling to go up 4-2 before Charlotte won the last match on court.
"I'm proud we were able to fight back after losing a close doubles point," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We were in position on three courts in the doubles and just didn't close it out, but we had some great performances in singles to get a good win against a very tough and battle-tested Charlotte squad. They are well-coached and have already played three SEC teams along with Penn State last night, so they didn't back down. Once again, we can do a better job of controlling momentum and taking control of matches early. We have a quick turnaround for Penn State tomorrow and we'll need our best effort."
The win was the 100th of coach Billy Pate's seven-year tenure at Princeton, making him the fourth coach to reach that mark along with David Benjamin (1975-2000, 339 wins), John Conroy (1946-1971, 259 wins) and Glenn Michibata (2001-2012, 135 wins).
Princeton will wrap the homestand with a 1 p.m. match against Penn State. Admission is free, video will be streamed on ESPN3, and live results will be available here.
