Princeton Helps EIWA Earn 47 Bids To NCAA Championships

The 2019 EIWA Championships, which will take place March 8-9 at Binghamton, will send 47 wrestlers directly to the NCAA Championships, which will be held at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh March 21-23. Princeton, which remains the 19th-ranked team in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll, helped the EIWA qualify several of those spots by placing six wrestlers apiece in the latest RPI and Coaches' Rankings.

Below is the breakdown for the number of automatic bids will be available at each weight for the EIWA Championships.

Each qualifying tournament was awarded automatic bids per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage at the weight class; ratings percentage index (RPI); and coaches' ranking. For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his conference tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class. Each conference was awarded a minimum of one automatic bid per weight class, which will go to the tournament champion, even if they did not have any wrestlers reach at least two of the three thresholds. NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at the tournament based solely on place-finish.

Princeton had several wrestlers ranked in either/both the RPI and Coaches' Rankings. Two-time All-American Matthew Kolodzik had the #1 RPI at 149, while Patrick Brucki (third, 197) and Patrick Glory (fifth, 125) were both in the Top 5. Other Tigers that were listed in the RPI were Quincy Monday (#14, 157), Travis Stefanik (#23, 174), and Kevin Parker (#27, 184).

Both Kolodzik and Brucki came in at #3 in the latest Coaches' Rankings, while Glory held his spot at #10. Stefanik (#27) and Parker (#30) were joined by freshman Marshall Keller, who holds the #32 spot at 141.

While the most direct path to Pittsburgh starts in Binghamton next week, it isn't the last chance for Princeton wrestlers. After all of the conference tournaments have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 44 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 12, while brackets and seeding will be announced on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. on March 13. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; quality wins; coaches' ranking; results against common opponents; RPI; qualifying event placement; and winning percentage.
