RECAPS: Session I l Session II
Patrick Brucki and Patrick Glory walked out of Ithaca last month disappointed by individual losses in a team dual vs. the Big Red. During the final session of the 2019 EIWA Championships, both wrestlers avenged those losses to claim their first Eastern titles and help clinch another third-place finish for the Tigers.
Princeton finished third overall with 122.5 points, 16 ahead of fourth-place Army. Lehigh defended its 2018 title with 153 points, while Cornell finished second with 139 points.
Princeton had eight placewinners during the weekend, including third-place finishes for Matthew Kolodzik and Quincy Monday — both of whom joined Brucki and Glory as NCAA qualifiers during the weekend. Leonard Merkin made a wild run from the 10th seed to the fifth spot on the medal stand, while freshmen Travis Stefanik and Marshall Keller placed sixth and seventh respectively. Junior Kevin Parker also placed seventh for his best EIWA finish.
Glory struck first in the finals with a takedown 28 seconds into the opening period, but Arujau evened the score with a reversal about 20 seconds later. Following a solid ride, Glory scored a reversal of his own and carried a 4-3 lead into the second period.
Glory had a significant ride for the better part of the second period, and he had the moment of the final when he was able to turn Arujau late in the period for an 8-3 lead. The Cornell freshman scored a reversal late in the period to stay alive, and he added a takedown in the third, but Glory was in control during the final minute and made sure he avoided any big moves en route to his 10-8 title win.
Glory had to rally in his semifinal match, as Penn's Carmen Ferrante hit the first takedown of that match. Similar to the final, it was the second period when Glory took over; he had a reversal and near-fall to open a lead, and he had a takedown with about 1:10 left in the final period to clinch the win.
Brucki had to overcome an early takedown from Honis, but he grabbed control in that opening period with an escape, a takedown and two back points. Honis would be within one point in the third period — the same position he was in during the Cornell dual — but Brucki wasn't about to let this lead get away. He scored a takedown with 21 seconds remaining to clinch an 8-6 win and Princeton's second title.
Kolodzik couldn't find his offense in the semifinal against fourth-seeded Jared Prince, who scored a pair of reversals in the second period, including one with only 12 seconds remaining, during a 5-4 victory. Kolodzik refused to let the loss impact the remainder of his meet, and he dominated a pair of top-five seeds on his way to third place.
Monday nearly pulled off the moment of the semifinal round, as he turned a 9-1 deficit into a 9-8 match late in the third period with a four-point nearfall. He had to gamble late for the final takedown and came up short, but he would find a late score in the final session. After a tech fall over the fourth seed, he took down fifth-seeded Lucas Weiland of Army in the final second to secure a 6-4 win and third place.
Merkin was the story of Day 1 at the NCAA Championships, and he nearly kept it alive in an exciting semifinal. A third-period reversal opened a 4-2 lead for Merkin over third-seeded Tanner Skidgel of Navy, but he gave up a takedown later and was caught in a scramble for the fall. Skidgel went on to win the EIWA title, while Merkin placed fifth, a major jump from his #10 seed.
Stefanik fell in a tight 6-2 semifinal to second-seeded Brandon Womack, and he ended up falling to higher-seeded opponents the rest of the way, including a 5-1 decision to third-seeded Ben Harvey to conclude his weekend in sixth place. Teammate Kevin Parker pinned Columbia's Brian Bonino to place seventh overall.
