Princeton Finishes Off West Coast Trip This Week
March 18, 2019 | Women's Water Polo
SAN DIEGO, Calif- The No. 14 Princeton Tigers finish off their West Coast Trip with three contests include two more against ranked opponents.
The Tigers battle the No. 25 San Diego State Aztecs on Tuesday (Mar. 19, 7 p.m. EST, 4 p.m. PST) before a jaunt to Irvine to take on the Concordia Eagles (Mar. 20, 4:30 p.m. EST, 1:30 p.m. PST). The trip wraps up at the No. 15 Long Beach State 49ers on Thursday (Mar. 21, 10 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. PST).
Princeton is 6-12 in program history against San Diego State, but has won five straight dating back to the 2014 season. The women's water polo group has never lost to Concordia in five games all-time. After dropping the first six meetings against the 49ers, the Tigers have won the last two in 2015 and 2017.
Head coach Derek Ellingson's unit is 13-6 this season after a 2-2 weekend at the Loyola Marymount Invitational. The Tigers dropped Cal-State East Bay, but fell to No. 19 San Jose State on Friday. The next day, Princeton again got a split, taking down Pomona-Pitzer, but losing to No. 12 Loyola Marymount. Ellingson's team has faced off against 10 ranked opponents and has picked up four wins.
Amy Castellano surpassed 50 goals for the season (51) over the weekend, giving her a new career high. She leads the squad with 77 points and 28 steals. The junior has scored in every game except for one and has 15 multi-goal outings. Laura Larkin has had an excellent freshman campaign, producing 34 goals, 18 assists and 16 draw ejections.
Lindsey Kelleher and Eliza Britt are on the door step of 30-goal seasons with 28 each. Kelleher has a team-best 40 assists and is one of 10 players ever to reach that milestone. She is well within range to break the single-season record of 65 set by Helen Meigs in 2009. Kailie McGeoy (19), Nicole Kresich (14), Annie Robinson (11) and Maddie Pendolino (11) have also contributed 10+ goals this season. Marissa Webb has posted a .539 save percentage in goal.
Following the West Coast trip, the Tigers welcome Wagner to DeNunzio Pool on Mar. 30 before getting into the main swing of the Collegiate Water Polo Association season in April.
