Tigers Open Weekend Series, Ivy Play with Win over Yale
March 23, 2019 | Softball
Kaylee Grant drove in four runs and five Tigers had multi-hit games as Princeton opened the Ivy League season and the three-game weekend series with Yale with an 8-0, five-inning win Saturday afternoon at the Class of 1895 Field.Â
Princeton had runners on base in all five innings, pushing the first run across in the second on two hits, a walk and an error. Three hits, a walk and error, with Alex Colón picking up the RBI, added up to two more runs and a 3-0 lead in the third.
The Tigers added to it in the fourth, with an Alex Viscusi double and a walk to Megan Donahey chasing starter Terra Jerpbak from the game. Grant greeted reliever Miranda Papes with a two-run double for a 5-0 lead. In the fifth, Princeton had three straight one-out singles from Colón, Mackenzie Meyer and Kaitlyn Waslawski, and two batters later Megan Donahey drew a two-out walk to make it 6-0. Grant then had a two-run single to end the game on the eight-run rule.
Grant's four-RBI day tied a career high, marking her fourth four-RBI game as a Tiger and first since April 27, 2018 against Penn.
Pitcher Allie Reynolds retired the first 10 Bulldogs she faced, giving up just three hits and striking out three without a walk as the Bulldogs stranded runners at first and third in the fourth and first and second in the fifth. The shutout victory was Reynolds' second of the season, along with a season-opening 8-0 five-inning win over Wright State. The sophomore had four such games last year, including one against Yale.
Princeton and Yale will wrap the series Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader.
