Ivy-Leading Tigers Open Series with WIn over Columbia

In a battle of teams seeking to stand atop the Ivy League on the new softball season, Princeton slugged its way past Columbia 11-5 Friday afternoon at the Class of 1895 Field to open the teams' three-game series with a win.

The series will continue Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader back at '95 Field. The games will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available here. Princeton and Columbia now co-lead the Ivy League at 3-1.

Princeton fell behind early Friday after Columbia used a hit, a walk, an error and a double, all with two out, to plate a couple runs in the top of the first. The Tigers got one of those back in the second on a Mackenzie Meyer two-out solo homer, and Princeton took a 3-2 lead in the third on an error, two hits and an Allison Harvey sacrifice fly with Ali Blanchard getting a run-scoring hit.

Princeton pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fourth on three singles, a Meyer double and a failed fielder's choice, with Alex Viscusi getting the RBI on a bunt on which Meyer scored. Megan Donahey had a sacrifice fly and Kaylee Grant had an RBI single in the inning.

After Columbia got two back in the fifth to make it 6-4 with Alexandra Yule getting a two-out, two-run single, Princeton put two on with a Haley Hoffman base hit and an error for Kaitlyn Waslawski to hit a three-run homer for a 9-4 lead. Princeton added to it in the sixth when a hit batter and another failed fielder's choice put two on for Meyer, who drove in her second and third runs of the day with a single. Meyer finished the day 3 for 4.

Columbia got one back in the seventh on a Maria Pagane solo homer, but the Tigers finished off the 11-5 win. The four homers on the day between the teams were all those players' first of the season.
