Princeton Poses Serious Challenge To #1 Stanford In Impressive Women's Lightweight Season Opener
March 30, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Last year, the Princeton women's lightweight rowing team found itself more than 12 seconds off the pace off a Stanford boat that was beginning an IRA championship journey. By the time that championship performance came around, an improved Tiger crew made up more than four seconds during a second straight medal performance at the national championships.
If Princeton can match that same level of improvement for the 2019 IRA Championships, the Tigers could find themselves on the coveted top spot of the medal dock.
The Tigers dropped an exciting 1V showdown to #1 Stanford by only three seconds Saturday during a full morning of home racing on Lake Carnegie. The Cardinal took the race and the Class of 2015 Cup in 6:27.1, while Princeton placed second in 6:30.1. The varsity four had a similar result, with Stanford edging Princeton by only 3.3 seconds.
"We were really happy with our execution of the race," junior Georgia Hellard Timm said of the 1V showdown. "We knew it was going to be a tough one, and we're very proud of our resilience and attack through the middle thousand. We would of course have liked to keep walking through them when we started to move, but it's just the beginning of the season, and there's plenty of room for improvement. We can already see how much fire our team has.
"We were most proud of how we've managed to pick up where we left off at the end of last season," Hellard Timm added. "It was about the same margin today as it was at IRAs, and we're confident that we'll continue to improve as the season goes on. We've got so much time and room for improvement, and we're so hungry for it. The field is closing, and it's going to be a dogfight this year. We're ready."
Princeton will face its biggest rival in the sport next Saturday when it heads to the Charles River to take on Harvard for the Class of 1999 Cup. Princeton currently holds the trophy after beating the Crimson by more than 12 seconds last year.
