UNCG Takes Down Princeton, 5-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Spartans rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take down the Princeton Tigers, 5-3, at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Joseph Flynn's two-out knock through the left side got the Tigers on the board in the top of the first inning. UNCG loaded the bases in its first at-bat, but James Proctor got a strikeout to finish the side.
Chris Davis added on to the Tigers' lead with a two-run home run in the third frame. Proctor retired seven straight Spartans before a walk to begin the sixth stanza. He finished the afternoon with eight strikeouts in six scoreless innings, scattering six hits.
UNCG got its first run on a wild pitch in the seventh. Princeton threatened with two runners in scoring position in the eighth frame, but a strikeout ended the rally. In UNCG's at-bat in the eighth, the first three batters reached before an RBI knock set the score at 3-2. A two-run single from Josh Madole gave the home squad the lead for the first time before a double play tacked on another run for the Spartans.
The Tigers got two runners in scoring position in their last bat, but a strikeout and flyout gave UNCG the victory.
Jake Boone led the Tigers with two hits while the pitching staff had 10 strikeouts in the loss. Madole and Ryan Caveness had multi-hit outings for UNCG.
Princeton and UNCG will complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
