UNCG Earns Two Wins Over Princeton
March 10, 2019 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Spartans picked up a series sweep over the Princeton Tigers with 6-2 and 5-3 decisions at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
UNCG 6, Princeton 2
The first batter to reach second base was Alex Dickinson on a fielding error in the third inning. The Tigers, again, had a runner get to scoring position after Nadir Lewis singled and stole second, but they couldn't bring him home.
UNCG got on the board in the fifth as Coleman Sawyer singled in Mike Ferrera. Sawyer circled the bases and scored the Spartans' second run on single from Jacquez Koonce.
UNCG scored three more times in the sixth inning on a RBI single from Josh Madole and two passed balls. Madole finished the scoring for the home unit with another run-producing hit in the seventh frame.
Dickinson hit his first career home run in the seventh inning with a two-run blast. Later in the stanza, the Tigers put runners on second and third, but a lineout completed the at-bat. Princeton had its first two batters get on in the next frame, however couldn't put together a rally.
Lewis reached base three times while Dickinson contributed two hits. Gnazzo snagged seven strikeouts in the loss. Three different Spartans had multi-hit performances while Jeremiah Triplett earned the win with eight punchouts.
UNCG 5, Princeton 3
UNCG's breakout inning came in the third, producing five runs on five hits. A RBI groundout before a run-producing hit and wild pitch gave the Spartans a 3-0 advantage. Caleb Webster's two-out two-run double made it 5-0.
Princeton put together an opportunity in the fourth inning as Lewis led off the stanza with a double. A walk and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases before Max West's groundout brought in the first Tiger run. A wild pitch added another tally, but a strikeout and flyout prevented any more runs.
Joseph Flynn ripped a single to left center that allowed Lewis to touch home in the seventh, but that finished the scoring.
Lewis had two doubles while Flynn and Max Machiorlette got on base three times. Keith Gabrielson had four punch outs in four stanzas.
Princeton heads back on the road next weekend (Mar. 15-17) with four games at Georgetown.
