April 11, 2019 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 15 Princeton Tigers travel to Bucknell to finish off the 2019 regular season this weekend (Apr. 13-14).
As the regular season ends, the Collegiate Water Polo Association standings still remain influx. No. 18 Bucknell and No. 6 Michigan remain at the top with 3-0 marks. Princeton is third at 3-1 followed by Harvard (3-2), Brown (0-3), George Washington (0-3) and Saint Francis (0-3). Whoever finishes with the No. 1 seed receives a first-round bye. Princeton could finish anywhere between No. 1 and No. 5 depending how games play out. The CWPA Championships, hosted by Brown, are from April 26-28. The championship game is Apr. 28 at 12 p.m.
As the Tigers travel to Bucknell, they will take on Brown on Saturday (Apr. 13) at 5 p.m. The Tigers have not lost to the Bears since the 2010 season, a span of 16 games. On Sunday (Apr. 14), No. 18 Bucknell battles Princeton at 12 p.m. The women's water polo team has earned three straight wins against the Bison. Only games featuring Bucknell will be streamed.
Princeton currently sits at 17-8 overall and 3-1 in the CWPA with six victories over ranked opponents. Last weekend, the Tigers dropped Saint Francis, 15-5, before a loss to No. 6 Michigan, 9-6. Against Saint Francis, Amy Castellano had a career-best six goals, tied for third all-time in a single-game. Head coach Derek Ellingson's group rallied to close within two vs. Michigan, but ultimately fell in a close affair.
Castellano came into this season with 69 career goals in her two seasons. This year, she's been extraordinary, contributing a team-best 68 tallies and 102 points. She is likely to become just the 10th player ever to reach the 70-goal milestone in a season. The junior paces the Tigers in shooting percentage (.596), steals (42) and sprint wins (15).
Another major contributor in 2019 has been freshman Laura Larkin. Larkin is second on the squad in goals (41) and has added 20 assists, 20 drawn ejections and 16 steals. Lindsey Kelleher is second on Princeton in points with 34 goals and 44 assists. She is second all-time in helpers with 171. Eliza Britt is the only player with at least 20 goals (33), 20 assists (24), 20 steals (21) and 20 drawn ejections (21). Nine Tigers have scored at least 10 tallies this year. Marissa Webb has a .537 save percentage in 19 starts at goalie.
The top three in the latest CWPA Varsity Poll remain the same with Stanford, USC and UCLA in that order. Michigan is tied for sixth while the Tigers are the second conference squad at No. 15.
