Men's Tennis Team Battles No. 16 Columbia to 5-2 Defeat
April 12, 2019 | Men's Tennis
The doubles point went Princeton's way and the 50th-ranked Tigers were battling throughout the singles matches, but 16th-ranked Columbia left Princeton with a 5-2 win to stay perfect in the Ivy.
The three Ivy-unbeaten teams entering Friday's play all won, with Columbia, Cornell and Harvard all 3-0. Princeton fell to 2-2 in the league with the loss.
"I'm proud of our team," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We played our hearts out and competed well against a very strong and seasoned Columbia squad. We had some momentum and it's unfortunate we had to move the match indoors because of the rain. Nonetheless, we were right there and just needed a few points to turn our way. We'll regroup and look forward to a very tough match at Cornell on Sunday."
Princeton won the doubles point thanks to a pair of tiebreaker wins, from Will Peters and Karl Poling at third and Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman at first. Holden's and Seggerman's win came in a battle of top-30 teams, with the 17th-ranked Tiger pair getting a win over 26th-ranked Jack Lin and William Matheson.
Singles play required two venues, with rain interrupting the matches and forcing the contest to move into Jadwin Gym. Peters helped get Princeton to a 2-1 lead with a win on court four, but the rest went Columbia's way.
Princeton will head on the road for the first time this Ivy season when the Tigers head to Cornell Sunday at 1 p.m.
