Women's Tennis Team Looks to Make Program History This Weekend
April 17, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Though the Princeton women's tennis program has won four of the last five Ivy League titles, there's still a chance to make some program history this weekend.
At 5-0 in the Ivy League, and coming off a 7-0 season last year, the Tigers are two matches away from their first consecutive 7-0 Ivy League seasons. Princeton has achieved four 7-0 Ivy League seasons before, in 2000, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
Both matches this weekend, against Brown Saturday and Yale Sunday, are 1 p.m. starts, set for the Lenz Tennis Center if playable outside and for Jadwin Gym if the weather doesn't cooperate. Admission is free. A win Saturday would secure a share of the Ivy title for Princeton, with the Tigers up a match on both Harvard and Yale.
If indoors, the matches will be streamed on ESPN3.
The weekend, which will also mark the final home matches for seniors Nicole Kalhorn and Catalina Vives, will give Princeton the chance to extend its four-match winning streak against Brown, which included an ECAC semifinal win over the Bears in February, and extend the team's six-match winning streak over Yale. Brown last defeated Princeton in 2016 in Providence, and Princeton has won the last four over the Bears in Princeton, with Brown's last win on campus coming in 2011. Yale's last win over the Tigers was in 2013 in Princeton, where the Tigers have won the last two in the series.
Should the Tigers pick up at least one win this weekend, it would mark Princeton's 15th Ivy League title, fifth in the last six years and seventh in the last 11. If Princeton is able to lock up the league's automatic NCAA bid, it'd be Princeton's ninth trip to the postseason and also fifth in the last six years and seventh in the last 11.
