Princeton Drops Road Contest At Monmouth
April 03, 2019 | Baseball
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth Hawks secured an 11-6 victory over the Princeton Tigers at MU Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Three straight hits from the Tigers with two out including a knock from Max West put the road unit ahead in the top half of the first inning. In the bottom half of the frame, a bases loaded walk and fielding error put the home team in front, 2-1. Monmouth added another tally on a groundout in its next at-bat.
The Tigers put a runner in scoring position in the third stanza and loaded the bases in the fourth, but couldn't get inch closer. The Hawks posted three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth to jump ahead, 6-1.
Joseph Flynn's RBI groundout and David Harding's RBI hit to left field closed the Tigers' deficit to three (6-3). Later in the sixth inning, the Tigers had the bases loaded, however a fielders' choice and groundout completed the opportunity.
Monmouth scored five times in the seventh and eighth innings to wrap up the scoring for the home squad. A sacrifice fly and two-run error provided three runs for Princeton in its last chance in the ninth.
Princeton finished with 15 hits, highlighted by Flynn's three singles, and had six walks. Eric Hoefer did not allow a run 1 2/3 innings of work while Jack Anderson struck out the side in his inning of relief.
JD Andreessen led the Hawks with three hits and three RBI in the win.
The Tigers dropped to 5-16 this season while Monmouth improved to 11-14-1 overall. Princeton will welcome Columbia to Clarke Field (Apr. 6-7). The two Ivy foes will take part in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
