Tigers Split Pair with Rider
April 03, 2019 | Softball
In its first of two non-conference home doubleheaders for the Princeton softball teams, the Tigers split with Rider Wednesday, dropping the opener 3-1 before a 9-1, five-inning win in the nightcap.
In the opener, four first-inning errors hurt the Tigers with Rider coupling those with just one hit to score three runs. That turned out to be enough, as Rider pitcher Debra Jones went the distance and gave up just a run on four hits without a walk, striking out six.
Princeton starter Allie Reynolds went five innings and only gave up the one hit and striking out four without a walk. Reynolds retired 10 Broncs in a row between the first and fourth innings and 13 of the final 14 she faced before giving way to Caroline Taber. Princeton used base hits from Alex Viscusi and Allison Harvey along with a Keeley Walsh sacrifice fly to plate a run in the sixth, but the Tigers got no closer.
In game two, Princeton used two walks, a two-RBI double from Walsh, a run-scoring single from Mackenzie Meyer and an Alex Colón sacrifice fly to score four first-inning runs. Two more leadoff walks in the second were costly for Rider, with a Megan Donahey base hit, a Harvey ground ball and a Walsh base hit pushing the lead to 6-0.
The Tigers added to the lead in the third, using two singles, three walks, including two with the bases loaded, and a Harvey RBI grounder to push the advantage to 9-1.
Ali Blanchard got the win for the Tigers, going four innings and giving up a run on five hits and two walks, striking out four. Riley Wilkinson closed it out in the fifth, giving up just a hit batter.
