Trippas Wins Steeplechase to Advance to NCAA Championships

Sophomore Ed Trippas put an exclamation point on Day 2 of the NCAA East Regional, winning the men's steeplechase to advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas!

Trippas clocked a personal record of 8:33.90 (35.77, 1:08.11, 1:09.37, 1:10.34, 1:10.49, 1:09.89, 1:07.44, 1:02.52) to beat out 47 other competitors in the event. He jumps into second place on Princeton's all-time top-10 list behind 2012 NCAA Champion Donn Cabral '12 with the third fastest time ever run in the Ivy League.

He was in the front pack of four as the race began and keep in that front four for the next six laps. Trippas picked off two runners on lap 7 before he stated to close on top seeded Daniel
Michalski (Indiana). He took the lead over on the final water pit and pushed the final 200 meters to have the fastest split time at 1:02.52.

The Ivy League steeplechase champion qualified for the NCAA East Regional with an 8:50.09, before crushing that time this evening.

Trippas leads a group of 12 from the East to the semifinal on Wednesday, June 5.

He wasn't the only one that advanced today.

Junior Joey Daniels advances in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a 13.79 to take second in heat 5 of the first round to move on to the quarterfinals.
Â
His 13.79 is the fastest time he has run in a Princeton jersey, while he has a PR of 13.70 from the Canadian National last summer.
The Princeton record holder in the event, Daniels is a two-time Ivy champion making his third NCAA Regional. Last year, Daniels was 14th with a 14.05 in the quarterfinals, and as a freshman was 27th in the first round with a 14.16.

Daniels is one of 24 that is moving on to tomorrow's quarterfinal at 7:20 p.m., He will run in lane 4 of heat 2 of 3.

Christian Brown had his freshman season come to an end in the 110-meter hurdles. He was eighth in heat 4 and 44th overall with a 14.35. A defensive back on the undefeated Princeton football team, Brown has the second fastest time in Princeton history with a 13.99 from Ivy Heps.
Also competing in his first NCAA Regional, freshman Chandler Ault finished 20th in the javelin. He hit 60.94 (199-11) on his first throw, 60.42 (198-3) on his second and had his best throw on his last attempt, a 63.74 (209-1).
Ault, who finished third at Ivy Heps, has a PR of 67.19, ranking him seventh on Princeton's top-10 list. He is the first Tiger to make the NCAA East Regional in the event.

Sophomore Robbie Otal competed in his second straight NCAA East Regional and saw a huge improvement upon last year's performance when he had three fouls. On his first throw Otal recorded a 51.30 (168-4), and then had a 50.78 (166-7) on his second before fouling on his third attempt. He finished 35th overall.

The Ivy League runner-up in the discus, Otal ranks fourth on Princeton's top-10 list with a PR of 56.33 (184-10).
