Maddox '11 Helps U.S. to FIBA 3x3 World Cup Title
June 23, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Princeton alum Kareem Maddox '11 and teammates Robbie Hummel, Damon Huffman and Canyon Barry completed a perfect run Sunday through the FIBAÂ 3x3 World Cup in Amsterdam, securing a spot in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
The title is the first for the U.S. in the event, which began in 2012 and was held every other year until 2016, when it began as an annual event. The previous U.S. best was a runner-up finish in 2016.
The seventh-seeded U.S. began its run with four pool-play games between last Wednesday and Friday, starting with a 21-16 win over top-seeded Serbia, which won four of the first five event titles, and continuing with a 22-3 win over Turkey, a 22-8 win over South Korea, and a 15-14 win over the host Netherlands.Â
Bracket play began Saturday with a 21-14 win over third-seeded Slovenia and continued Sunday with the semifinals, a 22-8 win over Poland, and the final, an 18-14 win over fourth-seeded Latvia.Â
Maddox, whose scoring high was six against Serbia, was a standout rebounder for the Americans, averaging six a game with a high of nine against South Korea.
The particulars for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) are yet to be set. The U.S. can qualify for the 2020 Games, either by being one of the top four teams in the Nov. 1, 2019 FIBA world rankings or by being one of the top three teams in the OQT.Â
