Day 6
We spent our first night in our new hotel in Milan, a futuristic hotel chain, that makes us feel like we're in an episode of the Jetsons. After a brief night's sleep we awoke to a great breakfast and training at the Campo XXV Aprile Stadium. We boarded up the bus after lunch to head into the city center of Milan, stopping at the Piazza Leonardo. From there we could see Opera House, the largest opera house in the world?, and the Galleria, full of high end stores that we fun to window shop. Most of us stopped by the mosaic floor featuring the bull. Italian lore is that if you spin on your right heel three times on a certain area of the bull, it will bring you luck.
Our tour guides showed us the sights of the Duomi di Milano dedicated to the Virgin Mary, that was constructed in 1386 as well as the Castello Sforza built in the 15th century for the Visconti dynasty. We then boarded the bus to the head to the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the site of Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper.
To many of our surprise, the Last Supper is not a movable piece of artwork but is on the wall of one end of a refactory. We were told that it took months in advance to reserve our tickets and seeing the masterpiece is a privilege. Only 25 people are allowed in the room at one time to see the work, which was painted using a dry technique and not fresco so that da Vinci could make it perfect and correct any changes he wanted to make – which would not be possible with a fresco.
Tomorrow is our final day in Italy, and marks our final meet as well.
