August 12, 2019 | Women's Water Polo
LIMA, Peru – Not far removed from a FINA World Championship, Ashleigh Johnson's remarkable international career continued as she helped the United States to the gold medal at the Pan American Games.
The United States was hardly threatened during the tournament, going undefeated (6-0) and outscoring its opponents, 142-24. It's the country's 59th straight victory and fifth consecutive Pan American Games title.
In group play, the gold medal squad took down Puerto Rico (23-3), Brazil (20-4) and Venezuela (23-3). In the quarterfinals vs. Peru, Johnson's team disposed of Peru, 21-3, before a 31-7 takedown of Cuba in the semifinals. The 24-4 decision over Canada in the gold medal contest let the group close out the tournament in style.
