Princeton To Play At Army In 2020
August 14, 2019 | Football
The 150th season of Princeton football has not yet kicked off, and yet there's already exciting news about the 151st.
Coming in the fall of 2020, Princeton will head to Michie Stadium to take on Army West Point. Princeton and Army have met 13 times previously, most recently with a home-and-home series in 1981 and 1982, both of which were Army wins.
"While we are focused on the 2019 season obviously, it's great to look ahead to 2020 and the game we're going to play at Army," says Princeton's Charles W. Caldwell Jr. Head Coach Of Football Bob Surace. "Michie Stadium is a beautiful place for football, and our fans will love it there. It's also a great opportunity to play an FBS opponent that went to a bowl game last year, not to mention a service academy with such a great tradition in the sport. It will be a really memorable experience for everyone involved with Princeton football."
Â
Princeton leads the all-time 6-4-3, and those two games in the early '80s are the only ones between the teams in the last 77 years. Of the first 13 games between the teams, there were eight that were played in 1908 or earlier, including four in the 1800s.
Army West Point and Princeton combined to go 21-2 in 2018, as Princeton had its first perfect season in 54 years at 10-0 and Army went 11-2, winning the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl by a whopping 70-14 over Houston. One of Army's two losses was a 28-21 overtime loss to Oklahoma, who was led by Heisman Trophy winner and overall No. 1 NFL draft choice Kyler Murray.
Princeton opens the 2019 season at home against Butler on Sept. 21. The Tigers will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of college football, which began with a Princeton-Rutgers game on Nov. 6, 1869. As part of the celebration, Princeton will be playing Dartmouth at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 9.
