Princeton Battles Boston College to 2-1 Defeat
September 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer
In what was the teams' first meeting since the first round of the 2015 NCAA tournament at Roberts Stadium, a Boston College player who was a freshman in high school at the time scored both goals for the Eagles, three minutes apart, in a 2-1 Boston College win in Princeton.
The Tigers countered those 31st- and 34th-minute goals from Eagles rookie Sam Smith with a rebound five-and-a-half minutes after Smith's second. In a play that began on a corner kick, Lucy Rickerson put the ball on net and Amy Paternoster gathered the rebound, finding Caroline Noonan for the put-back and Noonan's first collegiate goal to pull within 2-1.
Â
But, Smith's two goals stood up. She scored her third of the season on a play that began with a corner that Princeton couldn't clear, and three minutes after getting BC on the board, Smith took a centering pass from Riley Lochhead for a 2-0 lead.Â
Boston College survived being a player down for the final 17-plus minutes after Jade Ruiters drew her second yellow card of the match. Princeton outshot the Eagles 13-12 overall with four of those on goal for BC and three for Princeton.
The Tigers will make it back-to-back Boston opponents when Boston University, which the Eagles defeated 3-0 on Aug. 29, visits Thursday for a 6 p.m. start.
