Gillespie Guides Tigers to 2-1 Win Over Rider
September 11, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Freshman Walker Gillespie had a goal and an assist in his first collegiate game, with the markers coming just 20 seconds apart as Princeton opened its home slate with a 2-1 win over crosstown rival Rider on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first half Princeton changed up its personnel and things started to click.
"In the first half we weren't pressing the way we usually do and weren't making the runs we needed to," Gillespie said. "But we made a switch at halftime and try to get in behind more and play balls into the corners and it started to open up."
Princeton broke through in the 50th minute when Ben Bograd fed a ball up the left flank to Cole Morokhovich who put the ball into the box. Keeper Palo Gatinois tried to come out to cover the ball but Gillespie was able to get it free and send it into the back of the net.
Â
A nice strip by Danny Hampton in the midfield gave Princeton the first possession off the restart and Daniel Diaz Bonilla used a heads up play to find Gillespie make a a run down the right. With Gatinois taking the bait on Gillespie, he crossed to an open Kevin O'Toole and the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year connected to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Â
"It was really exciting, I wasn't quite expecting it," Gillespie said about his three-point game. He nearly added a second goal in the final minute with an excellent through ball played O'Toole but Gatinois cut off the angle at the near post.
Senior Jacob Schachner earned the win in net with three saves as the Tigers walk away with the Route 206 Derby.
Princeton will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they take on Loyola in Baltimore. Game time is at 7 p.m.
