Tigers Slay Dragons in 3-1 Victory
September 24, 2019 | Men's Soccer
Princeton earned its third consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over Drexel on Tuesday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Senior Benjamin Martin, sophomore Ryan Clare and freshman Spencer Fleurant each had goals. Senior Jacob Schachner made three saves in the win, with sophomore Kazu Shigenobu making a team save.
"I think Barlow has done a really good job with our formation, finding one that suited our players," Martin said. "We've found ourselves a little more and I credit his tactics and then us as a team coming together. It was a team win because we didn't play our best, but played well enough to win. Luckily we have a week off so I think this week will be big week for us in terms of finding ourselves even more and putting in a better performance at St. Joes."
Martin net his second goal in as many games to give Princeton the lead in the 39th minute. It all started with a Bobby Hickson throw in that made its way to Kevin O'Toole. O'Toole used some nifty footwork to break free from his two defenders and launched the ball into the box for Martin to head it past Cameron Sanders in goal.
Â
Princeton's final two goals came from its bench with Clare scoring in the 44th minute to expand the lead to 2-0 at halftime. It came off a Cole Morokhovich corner kick with Clare putting one on frame but Sanders couldn't handle the ball before Clare got another go.
Â
Fleurant tallied his first career goal to pad the lead at 3-0 in the 48th minute. Stymied in his first attempt, Fleurant was able to get his own rebound and put it past Sanders.
Yassine Elkahloun ended Princeton's shutout streak in the series at 716:10. He scored off a free kick from about 25 yards out, as he bent the ball around the man-made wall and into the near side.
Sanders made three saves on six shots in the losing effort for Drexel.
Princeton now 4-3 on the season will travel to St. Joseph's next Tuesday, Oct. 1 for a 7 p.m. game. It marks the final game before Ivy League play begins on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Dartmouth.
The win is Princeton's eighth straight in the series with Drexel.
