Princeton Nets Six Goals in Win at St. Joe's
October 01, 2019 | Men's Soccer
The reigning Ivy League champion enters its first competition, at Dartmouth, on a four-game win streak after a 6-3 victory at St. Joseph's (4-6) on Tuesday night.
The Tigers' six goals are the most goals in a game since the 2011 team had a 7-3 win at Seton Hall. In looking at this four-game win stretch, Princeton has outscored its opponents 15-5.
Leading the way in points was sophomore Ryan Clare who had one goal and assisted on three others for a five-point total. Clare's three assists ties the Princeton record for assists in a game. It's been done just seven times before, the last time by Andrew Mills against Yale in 2013.
Freshman Walker Gillespie, who has already earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors twice this year. Sophomore Truman Gelnovatch scored his first career goals, back-to-back, in the second half. Also collecting his first collegiate goal was junior Jonah Lytle.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead into the locker room before conceding a goal seven minutes into the second frame. Truman Gelnovatch buried two goals in the next five minutes to push Princeton ahead 5-1. St. Joe's added goals in the 68th and 78th minute to sandwich Lytls's goal in the 71st.
Senior Jacob Schacner earned the start and win in goal, making two saves in the first 74:38. Sophomore Sam Morton made his first appearance of the season, playing the final 15:22 and making one stop.
For St. Joe's, Josephn Boehm was pulled after allowing six goals as Princeton had a 14-9 shot differential.
