Princeton Falls at No. 5 Duke in the Season Opener
September 06, 2019 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a real test, facing No. 5 Duke - a squad that entered the game 2-0 on the season. The Blue Devil's leading scorer Daniel Proch scored twice to keep his team unbeaten with a 4-0 win over the Tigers, a team receiving votes in the national poll, on Koskinen Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Proch put the Blue Devils on the board in the 21st minute as he sent a shot into the opposite corner of an outstretched Jacob Schachner in goal. Scotty Taylor made it 2-0 before the close of the first half with a head flick on a Max Moser ball.
"Duke is a great team, and I think this is the highest ranked team we've ever opened with," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "Given the shortness of our preseason and several injuries over the last two weeks, we knew it was going to be a tough challenge. I thought we looked unsure and hesitant in the first but we came out much better in the second and played more cohesively as a team."
Princeton was without two of its starting defenders from a year ago, Bobby Hickson and Benjamin Issroff – as well as starting midfielder Gaby Paniagua. All three were All-Ivy League selections last year.
Princeton looked more settled in the second half and started to create some chances in its attacking third. In the 75th minute, the Tigers threaded some great passes together before the final touch by the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Kevin O'Toole was on frame. In the 82nd minute Frankie DeRosa nearly set up freshman Spencer Fleurant for his first collegiate goal, but the timing of the connection was just slightly off at the back post.
Proch tallied his second of the game as he fired in his own rebound on a penalty shot in the 80th minute. Schachner made a nice stop with his legs on the initial shot, one of his five saves on the afternoon, but Proch had the space to get the second chance effort to go. An unfortunate own goal four minutes later would put the game out of reach.
"We have to put this one behind us, take the lessons from it and move forward, because I think this group has a lot of potential."
