Princeton took second place at the Fordham Fiasco, opening the 2019 cross country season on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park. The Tigers, ranked No. 23 in the preseason national poll, had all five scorers finish in the top 10.
"We had an excellent training effort this morning at Van Cortlandt Park, home of the 2019 Ivy League Championships," head coach Brad Hunt said. "Our focus today was to familiarize ourselves with the course - especially the back hills, while building our effort as a group over the last half of the course. We are building towards the championship season in November and gaining valuable experience at the start of the season. It was great to see several proud Princeton alums in attendance to cheer in the team."
Junior Melia Chittenden was the first to cross the line taking fifth at 18:50.19 on the 5k course. She was followed right behind by freshman Maggie Liebich at 18:50.54, junior Sophie Cantine at 18:53.66, senior Sierra Castaneda at 18:54.03 and freshman Abby Loveys at 18:54.49 as the Tigers went 5-6-7-8-9.
Princeton scored 35 points to take second as a team with an average time of 18:52.59. Harvard took first with 22 points, while Manhattan and Penn tied for a distance third with 105 points apiece.
The Tigers next race is Saturday, Sept. 21 at Holmdel Park - the Henry Mercer Monmouth Invitational.
