ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Princeton University men's & women's track & field teams opened the 2020 calendar year at the Naval Academy Saturday, with the Tigers' women's program picking up a thrilling victory over the Midshipmen.
Princeton's women edged Navy 90-87 while its men had a strong showing, but fell 107-68.
"I was really pleased with how well they competed," said head coach Michelle Eisenreich. "The competitive spirit is what we were looking for and it's just a really great way to start off the season. We've got a lot we need to work on but this is how we needed to start the season and we're very happy with that."
Needing to triumph in both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays in order to win the meet, the Tiger women pulled through and prevailed in both races in times that were both approaching program records. In the 4x400 the team of Katie DiFrancesco, Milana Malec, Heide Baron and Arianna Smith finished in 3:47.71 seconds, an Ivy-leading time and the third-fastest time in school history, to come out on top. In the 4x800 the quartet of Abbey Loveys, Sophie Cantine, Madeleine Sumner and Gillian Wagner clocked in at 8:51.57 seconds to earn the victory. Their time was the eighth-fastest time in school history.
Four of Princeton's women also earned personal bests. Hadley Wilhoite, who won the high jump, cleared 1.70 meters which was also tied for the eighth-best mark in program history while Isabella Hilditch and Grace Lanouette each had personal bests in the 200 meters. Hilditch finished second in 24.80 and Lanouette clocked in at 24.88, the ninth-fastest time in program history, to finish third. Loveys also recorded a personal best in the 1000 meters, finishing fourth in 2:57.46 seconds.
Also earning first-place finishes for Princeton was Cantine in the 800 meters in 2:12.95 seconds, Gillian Wagner in the 1000 meters in 2:50.53 seconds, the ninth-fastest time in program history, India Weir in the 1-mile run in 4:57.80 seconds and Hilditch in the 60 hurdles in 8.69.
On the men's side, four Tigers recorded Ivy-leading marks. Sam Ellis won the 1000 meters with a time of 2:24.53 seconds, C.J. Licata won the shot put after a throw of 18.47 meters, Simen Guttormsen prevailed in the pole vault after clearing 5.20 meters and Jeffrey Hollis came out on top in the high jump as he cleared 2.19 meters.
