No. 15 Princeton Starts 2020 Season With A 2-0 Day At ASU Challenge

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 15 Princeton Tigers collected two wins to begin the Arizona State Challenge, defeating Cal State East Bay Pioneers, 11-9, and the Sonoma State Seawolves, 9-7, at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Saturday.
No. 15 Princeton 11, Cal State East Bay 9
Head coach Derek Ellingson's squad produced five goals in the fourth quarter including three of the final four tallies to collect the victory. Sarah Lawson and Kailie McGeoy each produced hat tricks while Marissa Webb had five saves in the win.
The Pioneers began the scoring with a 3-1 spurt and held before taking a 4-3 lead into halftime. Lawson tied the score as the third frame got underway but consecutive tallies by Cal State East Bay put Princeton behind, 6-4, with 3:17 remaining. Amy Castellano and Genevieve Fraipont countered with tallies, tying the game at 6-all as the stanza came to an end.
The two squads exchanged two-goal rallies before McGeoy threw two in the back in the cage in less than a minute to jump ahead, 10-8. Lawson's third goal put the matchup away with 1:19 left.
No. 15 Princeton 9, Sonoma State 7
The Seawolves started quickly scoring the first two goals of the game before consecutive tallies by Laura Larkin tied the contest with 1:51 remaining in the first quarter. Sonoma State answered with a two-goal spurt of its own to take a 4-2 advantage into the second stanza.
Princeton collected the last two goals of the first half, tying the matchup at 5-all. Ellingson's group gained some separation with three of the four goals in the third quarter, going up 8-6 with eight minutes to go. After a goal by the Seawolves at the 5:53 mark, the Tigers held the California team scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the win.
Princeton finishes the weekend with two top-10 schools in No. 3 Hawaii (11:15 a.m. ET, 9:15 a.m. MT) and No. 10 Arizona State (3:15 p.m. ET, 1:15 p.m. MT) tomorrow.
