Sears Reaches 200-Point Mark In Dominant Ivy Opener For Women's Lacrosse
February 29, 2020 | Women's Lacrosse
NEW YORK CITY – No. 13 Princeton started Ivy League play with a dominant 19-7 win at Columbia as the Tigers exploded for 14 goals in the first half to comfortably pull away from the Lions.
Kyla Sears had a historic game, becoming the eighth player in program history to reach the 200-point mark. She did so in the first half, and her milestone point was a memorable one as she scored from her knees with 5:17 remaining in the first half for a hat trick. She would finish the day with six total points and now sits on 202 career points to rank No. 8 by a Tiger.
Sears was one of three Tigers with four goals in the game, joined by freshmen Kari Buonanno and Grace Tauckus.
Gaby Hamburger entered the game with zero career points over her first year-plus. All she did in the Big Apple was dish out five assists.
Maria Pansini finished with four points and three assists, new career highs in both categories. Katie Reilly had a career-high three goals as part of a four-point afternoon.
Marge Donovan had six ground balls to go with three caused turnovers and four draw controls. Sam Fish had eight saves in goal.
The Tigers jumped all over the Lions, scoring the game's first nine goals to build a comfortable lead.
Princeton made an immediate impact on the eight-meter arc, going 5-for-6 on free position attempts to start the game. Buonanno (2), Sears, Reilly and Tauckus each had free position goals in that run.
The Tigers were excellent in shot selection in the first half, scoring 14 times on 16 shots on goal. Six different players had at least one goal in the first half, led by Kari Buonanno who had four in the opening period.
Sam Fish made six saves in the first half, while Columbia committed 10 turnovers. Those combined efforts kept Columbia off the scoreboard for the first 18:50 of action before the Lions converted a free position goal to end a 9-0 Princeton run.
The second half was played even, each team scoring five goals. Fortunately for the Tigers, the dominant first half was enough to cruise toward the win.
Princeton is back in the Empire State on March 8, taking on Stony Brook on Long Island at 12 p.m.
