Men's Hockey Stunned At Brown, 4-3
February 07, 2020 | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE – A furious comeback from Brown stunned Princeton at Meehan Auditorium as the Bears scored four times in the third period en route to a 4-3 win.
Princeton entered the third period with a 2-0 lead, but a pair of 4-on-4 goals from the Bears sparked the rally. Despite a Matt Kellenberger goal to retake the lead, the Tigers saw their lead wilt in the span of 2:43, capped by a Brown power-play goal with 4:39 remaining.
The Tigers pounced for a pair of power-play goals in the first period, each coming off the stick of senior captain Derek Topatigh – making him the first Tiger defenseman to score two power-play goals in a single game since he did it on November 2, 2018 at Dartmouth.
He struck twice in a span of 3:40, staking the Tigers to a 2-0 lead. His first PPG came 5:53 into the game as he walked the blue line and then wristed home the opening salvo with assists to Luke Keenan and Liam Grande.
Minutes later, Jake Paganelli won a loose puck in the corner, feeding back to Mark Paolini who dished across the zone to Topatigh who again had plenty of room to walk in and beat Gavin Nieto high glove to give Princeton a two-goal lead before the midway point of the first period.
The second period was a goalie battle as Aidan Porter made seven saves and Gavin Nieto made six.
A pair of 4-on-4 goals by the Bears 0:48 apart tied the game early in the third period. Tony Stillwell scored first, finishing a rush with his first of the season. Moments later, Luke Krys snuck out from behind the goal and lifted a backhander over Porter's shoulder.
Matt Kellenberger would briefly give Princeton back the lead with his first of the season just past the midway mark of the third period. Luke Keenan slid a pass across the offensive zone and Kellenberger stepped into a one-timer to make it a 3-2 game.
The Bears again tied the game via a Tristan Crozier goal with 7:22 to play. Crozier parked in front and scooped a rebound over Porter's blocker to tie the game.
Brown would take its only lead of the game on the powerplay as Bradley Cocca banged in a rebound with 4:39 remaining.
The Tigers are back in action on February 8 with a game at Yale at 7 p.m.
