Juarez Helps Mexico Earn Bid to FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup
March 10, 2020 | Women's Soccer
With three goals in seven games played, Princeton junior-to-be Gabi Juarez helped Mexico's U-20 team advance to the final of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship and with it, secure a berth to the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
The FIFA tournament is scheduled for August in Costa Rica and Panama. The top two teams in the CONCACAF event earned Women's World Cup berths, sending the U.S. and Mexico on to the FIFA event.
"Our staff is very proud of Gabi and her performances with the Mexican National Team during the recent CONCACAFÂ U-20 Women's Championship," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "She played her role as the target forward very well. She held the ball up with her back to pressure, linked with her midfielders and took up good spaces in the penalty area. In addition, she scored some nice goals. Most importantly, Gabi amassed more than 450 minutes and was a significant factor in helping her team qualify for the U-20 World Cup this summer. I am ecstatic that Gabi's dream of representing Mexico and playing this sport at the highest level continues to be realized."
Mexico was perfect through four group-stage games, with Juarez getting goals in wins over Guatemala and Grenada and playing all 90 minutes against Guatemala and Guyana. When the tournament moved to the knockout round, Juarez had Mexico's second goal in a 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, and the kick to seal it in penalties, 4-2, after a 1-1 tie against Haiti in the semis in which Juarez played the entire 120 minutes. Juarez played 35 minutes in the final against the U.S., which Team USA won 4-1.
