Men's Soccer Doubles Up Lehigh, 2-0
October 19, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Princeton dialed up a nonconference win, scoring twice in the second half to knock off Lehigh, 2-0. With the win, the Tigers improve to 7-5-0 overall while the Mountain Hawks fall to 2-10-2.
Spencer Fleurant gave Princeton a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season -- and first in 742 days dating back to a two-goal game against Delaware on 10/8/19 -- connecting in the 49th minute. The scoring sequence started with a turnover by the defense deep in its own territory followed by connected passing through the midfield. Malik Pinto had a first crack at goal, but his shot was blocked away. A trailing Tiger collected the rebound and looped a cross towards goal which Fleurant knocked down at the goalmouth before chipping a score over a falling Lehigh keeper.
The Tigers hunted a second goal throughout much of the second half, but hit three crossbars -- two off Daniel Diaz-Bonilla shots and a third coming off the boot of Kevin O'Toole. In the 80th minute, Diaz-Bonilla had a prime chance to net an insurance goal but his shot was only good enough to beat the goalkeeper and not the defender stacked on the line who blocked the shot with his knees.
The hunt paid off in the 86th minute as Kevin O'Toole continued his torrid pace with his fourth goal in four games to ice this one. Princeton worked some good ball movement, with Francis Akomeah-Sirleaf and James Wangsness connecting in the midfield before passing over to Malik Pinto who charged directly at a host of Lehigh defenders before slipping a pass to O'Toole who took a few steps and sent a right-footed shot inside the left post.
Sam Morton made five saves to record his second career clean sheet.
The Tigers return to Ivy League action on Saturday, venturing to Cambridge for a 4 p.m. match with Harvard.
