SERIES INFORMATION
Princeton is 4-6-3 all-time against St. John's as the two teams head into their first-ever meeting in the NCAA Tournament. The two sides are familiar with one another -- 12 of the 13 meetings have come over the last 16 years, including a 1-0 win for St. John's at Sherrerd Field in Princeton this season. Seven of the 10 games which have resulted in a winner have been decided by one goal. The Tigers are 2-3-1 all-time at St. John's
THE MEETING THIS SEASON
Michaah Garnette scored for St. John's in the 79th minute to break a scoreless tie and secure a win for the Red Storm in a mid-week matchup in Princeton on September 28. Garnette's goal came after a Princeton turnover and failed clear inside the Tigers' defensive third, the difference in an otherwise even contest.
PRINCETON IS PERFECT IN IVY PLAY
For just the second time in program history, Princeton went 7-0-0 inside the Ivy League. The undefeated and untied record in conference play matches the 2010 team as the only clubs to pick up all 21 Ivy points in a season. In the process, the Tigers secured their ninth Ivy League title in program history.
TIGERS TAKE TO NCAA TOURNAMENT FOR 11TH TIME
Princeton will take the field in the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time this week, marking the second time in three seasons played by Princeton where the team has advanced to the national tournament -- Princeton last qualified in 2018, the Ivy League did not compete during the spring season in 2021. The Tigers are 4-9-1 in the NCAA Tournament all-time, three of those wins were earned by the 1993 team that advanced to the national semifinals.
REMEMBERING 2018'S EPIC NCAA ENCOUNTER WITH MICHIGAN
The last time the Tigers played in the NCAA Tournament was one of the more memorable games in recent NCAA history. Tied, 1-1, after regulation and a pair of overtimes, the two teams embarked on a 14-round penalty kick battle which ended 11-10 in the Wolverines' favor. Princeton led in the 39th minute via a Benjamin Martin goal, and Michigan tied it at home in the 75th minute. As a snowstorm blew through Ann Arbor, the two sides played through 20 minutes of overtime before Michigan prevailed in PKs. Five of Princeton's 10 made PKs came from players on the current team -- including two from Kevin O'Toole and one each from Moulay Hamza Kanzi Belghiti, Michael Osei Wusu and Jack Roberts (who was the backup keeper that night).
JIM BARLOW REACHES 200 CAREER WINS
It took extra time, but Princeton's 1-0 win over Yale to close the regular season was special in many ways. Not only did it clinch an perfect Ivy season, but the win was the 200th of head coach Jim Barlow's career. Already the winningest head coach in the history of his alma mater, Barlow has 64 wins more than the next closest coach on this list (Jimmy Reed; 1938-66) and he has 108 more wins at Princeton than the man who was his head coach as a Tiger -- former U.S. Men's National Team coach, current LAFC manager and fellow Princeton alum Bob Bradley '80 (1984-95).
PILING UP THE WINS
Only three teams in program history have accumulated more wins in a season than the 2021 squad's 12 wins entering the NCAA Tournament -- the 1993, 1995, and 2010 teams each won 13 matches. Over the past three seasons played, Princeton is 32-14-6 overall and 14-3-4 in the Ivy League. The Tigers have won 10+ matches each of the last three seasons -- the first time in program history that Princeton has reached double figures in three consecutive seasons.
2021 RECORD VS. NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAMS
The Tigers are 1-2-0 in three matches against teams competing in this year's NCAA Tournament. The win came against No. 12 seed Penn State (1-0), the other loss was a 2-0 defeat at Vermont in the second games of the season.
