PRINCETON, N.J. – Nick Mead '17 has been named the USRowing Athlete of the Year, the organization announced.
Mead helped the United States 8+ to a fourth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics 8+ Final.
"I am so thrilled for Nick on being named USRowing's Male Athlete of the Year," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "That is such a huge honor and especially in an Olympic year. Nick is well deserving of the award. Yes, he's an impressive rower, but more importantly, he's a loyal, supportive teammate and a strong, positive presence around the boathouse every single day. Congratulations Nick! Everyone at the Princeton boathouse is extremely proud of you!"
The 2020 Olympics 8+ Final featured New Zealand, Germany, Great Britain, and the United State surrounded by a second of each other at the 500m mark. Not much changed as the same four stayed in striking distance (1.15 seconds) at the halfway point. With 500m left, the top four remained were all within two seconds of each other.
Germany, in third at 1500m, closed the gap to New Zealand, passing Great Britain for the silver, finishing just .96 seconds back at the line. Great Britain was .13 seconds off the silver and kept away a late push from the United States for the bronze.
The former senior captain helped Princeton to three medals at the IRA Championships during his time highlighted by a silver 2V medal in 2014. He also secured two bronze medals at V8 and finished fourth in 2017.
On the international stage, some of top accolades for Mead include a second-place finish in the eight at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
