#4 Heavyweight Rowing Wins Childs Cup For 15th Consecutive Season
April 11, 2026 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – The #4 Princeton University heavyweight rowing team won the Childs Cup for the 15th consecutive time at Lake Carnegie Saturday on action-packed day that featured competition between some of the nation's top programs.
"The Princeton Invite was an awesome experience," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "All told, we ran 54 races over the course of 9 hours, with a race coming down the course every eight minutes. The event brought together 17 of the best men's and women's programs in the country to create some very high caliber match-ups on all levels. This was our first time hosting an invite style event of this size and the energy was incredible. Our whole boathouse is extremely grateful for the support of the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association members who volunteered as staffing to make the event run so smoothly. We are also very appreciative of the USRowing officials who kept the racing on schedule despite some breezy conditions and a few unexpected complications. We owe a huge shout-out of gratitude to Cody Chrusciel and his broadcast crew in the Princeton Athletic department for creating high-quality live stream. And, last, but certainly not least, we are all very thankful to the Prospect Broadcasting crew of Keanan Clark, Tommy Lindeman and Joe Gartland for the best color commentary in the sport of rowing.
For our heavyweight squad, the racing brought our traditional cup racing together with some match-ups against some of the best west coast competition. Stanford joined in on the Childs Cup racing during our AM round and that really elevated the experience for our athletes. Then, to come back five hours later and line up against second ranked Cal for our PM dual race was special. These races gave our whole team valuable racing experience against some of the best boats in the country."
The Childs Cup started in 1879 and is the oldest cup race in collegiate rowing, with Penn last winning it in 1993 and Columbia in 2009. In 2020 and 2021 there were no race for the Childs Cup due to COVID-19 and in 2022 it was raced for at Eastern Sprints because all three teams were in the same heat. The Childs Cup was also not raced for from 1944-47 due to WWII and in 1917 due to WWI.
AM Session
The 1V (6:14.70) came out on top against #7 Stanford (6:22.05), the #10 University of Pennsylvania (6:25.87) and #19 Columbia (6:32.17) to retain the Childs Cup for the 15th consecutive season. In addition, the Childs Cup win was Princeton's 56th all-time to Penn's 44 and Columbia's 12.
The 2V (6:15.58) was likewise successful, finishing ahead of the Quakers (6:23.12), the Cardinal (6:26.90) and the Lions (6:40.15). In the 3V race, Princeton (6:34.34) picked up another victory, with Penn (6:37.05) coming in second, Stanford (6:39.97) third and Columbia (6:58.07) fourth. The 4V (6:43.66) finished ahead of the Lions (7:21.920) but behind the Quakers (6:40.66). The 5V race saw the Tigers (6:33.87) pick up the win over Princeton's lightweight 4V (6:39.67) and Penn.
