Despite Meyers' Career Night, Women's Basketball Falls at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Despite a career night from senior Abby Meyers, the Princeton University women's basketball team fell 61-53 to the University of Rhode Island Saturday.

Meyers finished with a game and career-high 22 points of 8-for-15 shooting, including a 2-for-4 effort from behind the three-point line and a 4-for-5 effort from the free throw line. She eclipsed her previous career-high of 21 points from the Tigers' win over Villanova on Wednesday, November 10. Sophomore Ellie Mitchell also had a career night on the boards, hauling in a career-best 15 rebounds, one more than her previous career-high of 14 from the Tigers' victory over Yale on Friday, February 14, 2020.

Sparked by a Meyers three-pointer at 9:39, the Tigers opened the game on a 9-0 run that was not halted until there was 3:47 left in the quarter following a Rhode Island made jumper. Sophomore Kaitlyn Chen completed a layup with 0:06 on the clock, and Princeton took an 11-2 lead into the second quarter.

While Meyers extended the Tigers' advantage to 11 with a layup with 8:25 remaining, the Rams responded with an 11-0 run, knotting the score at 13-13 with 5:21 on the clock. A junior Grace Stone layup at 1:52 gave Princeton a 20-17 lead, and the Tigers took a 20-19 advantage into halftime.

Meyers drained a three-pointer for the first basket of the second half with 9:08 on the clock, but the Rams responded with an 8-0 run to take a 29-26 advantage with 3:33 left in the quarter. The Tigers and Rams continued to trade baskets, and another Meyers three with 00:20 remaining saw Princeton take a 35-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Rhode Island opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups, and did not look back from there. A Chen layup at 8:37 made it a one-point game at 38-37, but the Rams would run away with quarter and come away with the 61-53 victory.
