Women's Soccer Earns 14th NCAA Tournament Bid, Hosts Vermont
November 08, 2021 | Women's Soccer
For the 14th time in program history, the Princeton women's soccer team is headed to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton will host Vermont for a first-round game on Friday at 6 p.m. on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium. Tickets are availablle here.
"I could not be happier for our players and staff," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "From our first day of preseason, we have appreciated the opportunity to be together again. The time away due to COVID really put everything into perspective. This team may very well have the tightest bond of any I have been around in my lengthy career. They truly enjoy each other's company and, to a person, never put their own personal needs ahead of the team's. Our goal has been to extend the season as long as possible and I am beyond grateful that we get to do so. The icing on the cake is an opportunity to host another NCAA game. Two of my favorite coaching memories have been our first round games against Boston College in 2015 and Monmouth in 2017. There is just nothing like a home game in the tournament. I am looking forward to sharing that special moment with our team this Friday."
The Tigers finished the regular season 14-2-1, winning five in a row entering the tournament, and all by shutout.Â
Led in scoring by senior Gabi Juarez, with eight goals and 21 points, Princeton has seen 14 players score a goal on the season, the program's most since 14 players scored in 1999.
Vermont finished 12-5-1 overall and 7-2 in the America East, winning the America East Tournament to secure the bid. Princeton and the Catamounts have one common opponent this season in Dartmouth, which beat Vermont 2-1 on Aug. 29 and which Princeton beat 3-0 on Oct. 2.
Vermont and Princeton have not met since the 1987 season, with Princeton winning 2-1 in overtime at home. The Catamounts won 1-0 the previous year in Burlington in the teams' only other meeting.
The winner will take on the winner between TCU and Prairie View A&M in a round-of-32 game the following weekend. That game would be hosted by Rutgers, should the Scarlet Knights win their first-round game.
The complete bracket is available here.
