Women's Basketball Uses Five Players In Double Figures To Take Down Buffalo In OT Thriller

PRINCETON – The Princeton Tigers used five players in double figures to overcome the Buffalo Bulls, 79-77, in overtime at Jadwin Gym.

Julia Cunningham paced the Tigers with 21 points, adding eight rebounds, four assists and a block. Grace Stone (16), Abby Meyers (12), Kaitlyn Chen (12) and Maggie Connolly (11) also reached the double-digit mark. It's the first time Princeton had five players with at least 10 points in a game since a 77-62 victory at Brown on Feb. 3, 2018.

Cunningham started the extra session with the first three points before two from the charity stripe from Buffalo set the score at 69-68 with 3:54 to go. Chen scored the next six points for the Tigers, giving the home squad a 75-72 advantage with 1:45 left. The Bulls answered with a bucket on the next possession.

After two trips down the floor, Buffalo had a chance to take the lead with 30 seconds remaining but turned the ball over. Forced to foul, the Bulls sent Connolly to the line where she sank two before another turnover by the road team. Chen added her seventh point of overtime on a free throw, giving Princeton a four-point margin, 78-74, as the clock read seven seconds. Buffalo's Dyaisha Fair, who had a game-high 31 points, scored a remarkable three-pointer with two seconds left. After another foul by the Bulls, Stone hit a free throw before Connolly stole a last-ditch heave to seal the win.

The start of the contest was excellent for the Tigers as they ended the first quarter on a 17-6 run to take an 11-point differential (21-10) after 10 minutes. Princeton ran off the first seven points of the second stanza extending its advantage to 18, 28-10.

This time it was Buffalo to go on a sprint, scoring 21 consecutive points to jump in front, 34-30, with under a minute to play in the first half. The Tigers trailed by one, 34-33, at halftime.

Princeton's deficit to ballooned to eight, 46-38, with 2:47 left in the third quarter before a 9-0 blitz turned the game into a one-point cushion heading into the fourth frame.
The fourth stanza was a wild 10 minutes featuring nine ties and eight lead changes. Tied at 63-all, Stone drew And-1 opportunity on this play ….

Princeton improves to 7-3 and ended Buffalo's five-game winning streak (6-3). The Tigers welcome No. 11 Texas to Jadwin Gym on Dec. 22. The Longhorns are the highest ranked opponent to ever play at Princeton.
