On two continents and thousands of miles apart, Princeton wrestlers won championships on Saturday, with junior Patrick Glory winning the 125-pound title at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas and Matt Cover, a sophomore set to rejoin the Tigers in a matter of weeks, winning the Junior Pan American Championship title at 125kg in Cali, Colombia.
Glory led four Princeton placewinners in Las Vegas as Princeton took ninth in the team standings with 63.5 points among the 26 teams to score. Classmate Quincy Monday finished second at 157, freshman Luke Stout took fifth at 197, and junior Travis Stefanik took sixth at 184.
Glory, ranked second in the nation, defeated two fellow ranked opponents on Saturday to win the title, taking a 4-2 decision over Michigan's Jake Medley in the semis before a 13-0 major win over seventh-ranked Devin Schroder of Purdue to become Princeton's first champion at the event.
Monday, ranked fifth in the country, picked up his second top-10 win of the year in the semis, defeating Nebraska's sixth-ranked Peyton Robb 11-6 in the semis before coming up short to second-ranked Ryan Deakin in the final, 8-3.
Stout, who holds the No. 27 spot in the nation by the InterMat rankings, beat 21st-ranked Gavin Hoffman of Ohio State 7-5 in the first of three consolation bouts on the day, moving on with a win over Utah Valley's Evan Bockman 3-1 before a 5-4 loss to Oklahoma's sixth-ranked Jake Woodley. Stout took fifth as Tiger alum Patrick Brucki '21, completing a graduate year at Michigan, fell in his previous bout in a medical forfeit before the fifth-place bout, which would have matched Stout and Brucki, went to Stout in a medical forfeit as well.
Stefanik, 24th in the nation, had a ranked win as well on Saturday, following up a 5-4 win over Oregon State's Jackson McKinney with a 10-6 win over 20th-ranked Max Lyon of Purdue in the second of his three consolation bouts on the day. Stefanik ended his day with a medical forfeit to Wyoming's Tate Samuelson before taking sixth as the fifth-place bout went to Oklahoma's 18th-ranked Darrien Roberts, also by medical forfeit.
In Colombia, Cover went 3 for 3 to win the title, bookending his day with 10-0 wins. The first came over Colombia's Jhoan Andres Ocoro in the quarters before a 4-3 win over Cuba's Yoan Alexander Robert Ramirez in the semis. A 10-0 win over Mexico's Luis Rodrigo Orozco Cortez in the final delivered the title to Cover.
