Lizzie Bird ’17 Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

BIRMINGHAM, England – Princeton University women's track & field alumna Lizzie Bird '17 has been named to Team Great Britain in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the Tokyo Olympics, as announced by British Athletics.
Competing at the Müller British Athletics Championships in Manchester, England, Bird won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:35.56 on Friday, June 26. She will join Princeton women's track & field alumna Julia Ratcliffe '17 in Tokyo, as she will be representing New Zealand in the discus.
Bird earned an Olympic standard time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Portland Track Festival – High Performance Meet on the campus of Lewis & Clarke College on Saturday, May 29. She finished in 9:26.73 and the Olympic standard time is 9:30:00. Bird also finished third out of 21 competitors.
Bird was an NCAA Honorable Mention All-America honoree in the steeplechase in 2015 and was a four-time NCAA Regional qualifier in the event. She was a two-time Ivy League champion in the steeplechase and part of the 4x800 team that won a conference title in 2017. Bird was also a NCAA Cross Country participant in 2015 and 2013 along with being an Ivy League Cross Country Champion in 2015.
She currently holds the indoor school record in the mile along with top-five times in the steeplechase, the 3,000, the 4x800, the 4x1,5000 and a top-10 time in the 1,500.
Bird was not the only Tiger to compete at Olympic trials. At the U.S. Olympic trials, Imani Oliver '14 finished fourth with a mark of 13.84 meters. Closing in on almost 20 years since her graduation, Carrie Dimoff '05 finished 30th in the 10K in 33:25.00.
Obiageri Amaechi '21 competed in the discus at the Nigerian Olympic Trials, finishing with a best throw of 55.18 meters.
Isabella Hilditch and incoming freshman Lilly Parris also competed at the Müller British Athletics Championships. Both women finished fourth in their respective heats of the 100 hurdles, with Hilditch clocking in at 13.68 and Parris at 13.69.
