Lizzie Bird ’17 Sets British National Record in Steeplechase

MONACO – With the Tokyo Olympics set to take place in the coming weeks, Lizzie Bird '17, alumna of the Princeton University women's track & field team, is rounding into superb form as she set a new British national record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at the Wanda Diamond League Meet.
Bird's new national record and life-time best time was 9:22.80, besting the previous record of 9:24.24 set by Barbara Parker on June 2, 2012. Bird's previous PR was 9:26.73, set at the Portland Track Festival on May 29.
Bird also earned an Olympic standard time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Portland Track Festival – High Performance Meet on the campus of Lewis & Clarke College on Saturday, May 29. She finished in 9:26.73 and the Olympic standard time is 9:30:00. Bird also finished third out of 21 competitors.
Bird was an NCAA Honorable Mention All-America honoree in the steeplechase in 2015 and was a four-time NCAA Regional qualifier in the event. She was a two-time Ivy League champion in the steeplechase and part of the 4x800 team that won a conference title in 2017. Bird was also a NCAA Cross Country participant in 2015 and 2013 along with being an Ivy League Cross Country Champion in 2015.
She currently holds the indoor school record in the mile along with top-five times in the steeplechase, the 3,000, the 4x800, the 4x1,5000 and a top-10 time in the 1,500.
