July 29, 2021 | Heavyweight Rowing
TOKYO – The final night of rowing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics featured three Princeton Tigers in the 8+ Final highlighted by Tom George '18 collecting a bronze medal for Great Britain.
Princeton had George, Nick Mead '17 (United States) and Tim Masters '15 (Australia) racing for a medal. It was the second consecutive night for the men's heavyweight program to pick up a bronze as Fred Vystavel '16 earned one in the 2- Final yesterday.
"I am so proud of Tom and pumped to see him win that bronze," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. :He has taken on the challenges of the last four years with impressive focus and commitment and it has been inspiring to watch. I know how hard he's worked to earn this medal and it is so awesome to see him win it. Huge congratulations Tom!"
The 8+ Final featured New Zealand, Germany, Great Britain, and the United State surrounded by a second of each other at the 500m mark. Not much changed as the same four stayed in striking distance (1.15 seconds) at the halfway point. With 500m left, the top four remained were all within two seconds of each other.
Germany, in third at 1500m, closed the gap to New Zealand, passing Great Britain for the silver, finishing just .96 seconds back at the line. Great Britain was .13 seconds off the silver and kept away a late push from the United States for the bronze.
