Tokyo Olympics: Julia Ratcliffe '17 Advances to Hammer Throw Final

TOKYO – She's been an NCAA National Champion. She's been a Commonwealth Games Champion. Princeton University women's track & field alumna Julia Ratcliffe '17 can now say she's been an Olympic finalist, after finishing sixth overall in the hammer throw qualification round and earning a spot in the final.
Competing in Group A and representing New Zealand, Ratcliffe's first throw went 73.20 meters, then she followed with a throw of 68.69 meters. Her final throw went 70.38 meters. Ratcliffe's mark of 73.20 meters ended up being the sixth-best throw of all athletes in both groups and the fourth-best mark in Group A.
The final of the hammer throw will take place on Tuesday, August 3 at 7:35 a.m. ET inside Olympic Stadium.
The 2014 NCAA Champion in the hammer throw, Ratcliffe was a four-time All-America honoree at Princeton along with a gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She was the NCAA National Runner-Up in 2015, the Outdoor Heps Most Outstanding Field performer four times, the Penn Relays Hammer Throw Champion four times, the Ivy League hammer throw champion four times, the Ivy League weight throw champion twice, and the USTFCCCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2014. Her mark of 70.28 meters from the Larry Ellis Meet in 2014 stands as the school record in the hammer throw.
