Spinka Highlights Start for Heavies at U-23 World Rowing Championships

RACICE, Czech Republic – Six Tigers have been off and racing at the U-23 World Rowing Championships this week.
Erika Spinka '23 in the United States 4+ helped his boat cruise to a 2.88-second victory (6:15.12) in its preliminary race over Ireland to move on to the A Final.
Spinka and his teammates led by seven meters after the first 500 over Ireland as those two countries separated themselves from the pack. The United States' advantage grew to over a second during the next 500m before expanding to almost two seconds at the 1000m mark. Ireland couldn't close the distance during the final stretch as the United States took the win.
The final for the 4+ is on July 10th at 9:15 a.m.
Keelan Good '24 and Nate Phelps '23 (United States 4x) was fourth in their heat (6:13.31) behind the Czech Republic, Poland and Argentina and will race in a repechage on July 9th at 4:40 a.m. ET. The United States must be among the top three to advance to the semifinals.
Tassilo von Mueller '21 and Floyd Benedikter '23 (Germany 8+) placed third in their heat (5:42.12), trailing Great Britain and Netherlands. Their repechage is July 9th at 5:25 a.m. They need to finish in the top two to go to the A Final.
Stephane Pienaar '22 (South Africa 2-) and his teammate Mmbudzeni Masutha just missed out on the semifinals, finishing fourth in its repechage (6:52.50). The C Final for the pair is at 4:15 a.m. on July 10th.
Jelmer Bennema's (Netherlands 4-) four was fifth in its heat (6:36.86) on Wednesday and will race in its repechage on July 9th at 3:35 a.m. The four needs to be place in the top three to advance to the semifinals.
